On Cloud 9 with Chocolate #9

I was first impressed by the fact that Chocolate Agave #9 only has two ingredients: chocolate and agave. How many packaged foods only have 2 ingredients, both of which you can read and understand what they are?! The agave is organic and the chocolate 100% Belgian. I love how simple it is. No chemicals. No preservatives. No refined sugar. And all vegan to boot!

Chai Chia Pudding

When combined with a plant-based, unrefined sugar, such as agave or raw honey, chia delivers sustained energy. The seeds actually create a physical barrier in the stomach between carbohydrates and digestive enzymes. This results in a slower absorption of sugar into the blood stream, meaning prolonged energy rather than “spiking and bonking.”

Honey Power: Sweet benefits of cold-packing.

“Honey is an ideal builder of glycogen stores because its sugar is composed of a 1:1 ratio of glucose to fructose. The fructose unlocks the proper enzymes in the liver to allow the glucose to store as glycogen. This can profoundly increase recovery time as well as provide an ideal pre race fuel.”

Icy Chia Fresca

Made this for the second day in a row. Pretty easy, nutritious, and surprisingly tasty and refreshing. I didn’t follow a recipe and am still experimenting. Let me know if you try this recipe or your own variation.
Icy Chia Fresca

1/2-1 Tbs Ground chia seed
~6 ice cubes
1/2 cup water
1/2 lime

The Jungle Effect

I began reading The Jungle Effect: A Doctor Discovers the Healthiest Diets from Around the World—Why They Work and How to Bring Them Home by Daphne Miller, MD., over the weekend. I discovered the book while looking in the health section at Books, Inc. I had just finished Born to Run and was interested in [...]

On Pins and Needles

I paid my first visit ever to an acupuncturist yesterday – her name is Beth. This was the first time I had ever visited one, and maybe even the first time I had ever come face to face with one. Turns out, they’re not necessarily sadochists who get pleasure out of inflicting pain on people. [...]

Cocoa Chia Shake

This recipe is still in an experimental stage (shall we say “beta” carotene?), but tastes pretty good on first try.
Cocoa Chia Shake
Ingredients
16 oz soy milk (I use Silk)
1 banana
1/4 cup frozen berries (boysenberries or blueberries are really good)
1 Tbs ground chia seeds
1 Tbs soy protein (I use Whole Foods  Soy Protein with Spirulina)
1 tsp baking [...]

On Being Vegetarian

I am at least a third generation vegetarian (do they give out prizes for that?). My father and his parents were vegetarians all of their lives and my mom and her parents had been mostly vegetarian (a few cooked hens at a few Christmas dinners), and my mom hadn’t had any meat for many years [...]

Risking It All

I’ve taken up a pretty bad habit of late. A potentially lethal one at that. Like Bear Grylls puts himself in danger’s way on the Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild, I have begun to put myself in dangerous situations. I disregard the warning signs over and over again. I just get caught up in the [...]
